Shi Huaiyu, surnamed Xu, was a native of Bingzhou. In his youth he was alert and sharp, reading a thousand words a day; he revealed his sharp brilliance early on, far surpassing his peers. When he grew older, his moral discipline became increasingly austere, making him a mirror and model for the monastery. His aspiration lay in restoration and repair, making no distinction between this and that: among the temples across the Xia ruins, wherever scriptures were lacking, he inevitably supplemented them, and wherever images had deteriorated, he fully repaired them. Three times he held administrative office, making notable contributions to construction. Moreover, he collated more than twenty sets of the Tripiṭaka, neglecting neither mornings nor evenings through severe cold and intense heat. He embellished the Pure Land Courtyard, laboring to the limit of his strength to establish endeavors, making it ever more exquisitely splendid. Emperor Daizong commended him and appointed him host of the Abhiṣeka Bodhimaṇḍa. His mantras and secret formulas indeed had their efficacy! He was sixty-three years of age when he passed away in his own courtyard.
