Śramaṇa Tanxiu, whose courtesy name was Defu, was surnamed Li. His capacity and demeanor were broad and expansive, and his resolve and conduct were well-disciplined. From the time he took the monastic vows, he never allowed the slightest defect. He mastered the gradual teachings, reaching great subtlety and refinement. In the Xiangbu commentary tradition on the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya, he became an abundant repository of learning; beginners who sought his instruction all reached profound heights. In the intervals of his lecturing and instructing, Tanxiu supervised the affairs of the temple. This temple had been founded under the Liang dynasty, and four hundred years had elapsed; though its towers and pavilions stood lofty, the brackets and king-posts were leaning and loose. Tanxiu was skilled at reforming the old; his constructions were free of defects, made especially magnificent—grand and splendid! Moreover, the State-Protecting Sūtra Tower and the various halls and buildings were all renovated. Next was the temple's gate tower—which had originally been initiated in the fourth year of Chang'an by the late Vinaya Master Tanyi—which had subsequently fallen into ruin; he rebuilt and re-roofed it, restoring it entirely as originally founded. Furthermore, displeased that the hall seat for the manifestation body of Dharma Master Kang Senghui from the Yonghui era was low and mean, he solicited people to alter the old structure during the Xiantong era. At a single word from Xiu, the faithful patrons responded like an echo. Later he passed away at his resident temple, which is present-day Dashan Monastery.
