Śramaṇa Fazang was of unknown clan and family. His nature was upright and proper, and he delighted in performing acts of charity toward others. He once rallied people in Weichuan to build a temple; the Buddha halls and monastic quarters were all solemn and magnificent, adorned with florid carvings, which were regarded as a magnificent sight in Fuzhi. Zang happened to fall gravely ill and died suddenly. He arrived at a refined hermitage, adorned with the seven jewels, such as does not exist in the human world. Outside the gate was a monk whose Indian features were remarkable and extraordinary; he proclaimed, "Fazang, your building of the monastery is not without wholesome retribution, but why do you have the transgression of mutual misapplication of the property of the Three Jewels? How can you wash it clean?" Zang confessed it, and the monk said, "If you simply copy the Diamond Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra and constantly apply yourself to receiving and upholding it, how could your sins not be extinguished? It will also lengthen your lifespan." Having finished speaking, [Fazang] revived. He personally copied the scripture and recited it aloud at midnight. When Zang passed away, his age was said to be one hundred and ten years. The people of Diaoyin revere and believe in him to this day.
