27.43

釋法興，洛京人也。七歲出家，不參流俗。執巾提盥，罔憚勤苦。諷念《法華》，年周部帙。又誦《淨名經》，匪逾九旬。戒律軌儀，有持無犯。來尋聖跡，樂止林泉，隷名佛光寺。節操孤頴，所霑利物，身不主持。付屬門人，即修功德，建三層七間彌勒大閣，高九十五尺。尊像七十二位聖賢、八大龍王，罄從嚴飾。臺山海眾異舌同辭，請充山門都焉。蓋從其統攝，規範準繩，和暢無爭故也。大和二年春正月，聞空有聲云：「入滅時至，兜率天眾今來迎導。」於是洗浴焚香，端坐入滅。建塔于寺西北一里所。

Śramaṇa Faxing was a native of the western capital, Luoyang. He went forth from the household at seven years of age and did not mingle with the common vulgarity. Holding towels and carrying washbasins, he did not shirk toil and hardship. He recited the Lotus Sūtra, completing the entire set of fascicles in a year. He also recited the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa in not more than ninety days. In his monastic discipline and ritual demeanor, he observed everything and violated nothing. He came to seek the sacred traces, delighted in dwelling among the forests and springs, and was registered at Foguang Temple. His moral integrity was extraordinarily outstanding, and as for the material wealth he received, he did not manage it personally. Entrusting it to his disciples, he immediately performed meritorious deeds, constructing a three-story, seven-bay Great Pavilion of Maitreya, ninety-five feet high. Statues of the seventy-two sages and worthies, as well as the eight great dragon kings, were all fully adorned. The oceanic saṅgha of Mount Tai, speaking with different tongues but in one voice, requested him to serve as the rector of the mountain monastery. This was because under his administrative leadership, with norms and standards maintained, there was harmony and absence of dispute. In the spring, in the first month of the second year of Dahe, a voice was heard in the sky saying, "The time to enter extinction has arrived; the retinue of Tuṣita Heaven now comes to welcome and guide you." Thereupon, he bathed, burned incense, and entered extinction sitting upright. A stūpa was erected for him about one li northwest of the temple.
