Śramaṇa Yizhuang, surnamed Zhang, was a native of Huatai. When he left his parents' arms and reached the age of going to a tutor, his spiritual radiance was distinctly bright, and worldly entanglements suddenly vanished. Thereupon, at Kaiyuan Temple in his home prefecture, he joined the ranks of Sudhana and ascended to the virtuous status of the precepts. Fond of itinerant wandering, he began by hearing and studying the Lotus Sūtra in Luoyang. His insight exceeded ordinary men; he expounded the teachings and instructed living beings, and the community requested that he reside in the Jiuyao Cloister. Without any shortfall in the Dharma food, he assisted those coming and going. With compassion he benefited living beings without intermission from beginning to end. At the beginning of the Jianlong era (960), Left Policy Adviser Lord Shen memorialized the throne to bestow on him a purple robe; more than thirty monks and nuns received instruction under him. Zhuang was earnest and diligent by nature; beyond lecturing, for fifty years he was scrupulously watchful, paying homage and repenting twice a day without fail even into old age. In the eighth month of the wuyin year of the Taiping Xingguo era (978), he suddenly passed away at the worldly age of seventy-eight, with a saṅgha age of fifty-nine. In the second month of the following year, his stūpa was relocated to the west of Bodhi Temple in Longmen.
