Shi Master Zhen of Xiuguang Temple in Yuyao was a native of Jinhua, with the secular surname Wang. In his youth Zhen left his family; enlightened to the Way as a child, he gave rise to great vigor and firmly upheld the ground of the precepts. Within his single clan, several individuals wore the dark robes. In his studies Zhen took the ancients as his teachers, his comprehension matching the former sages; the principles of the eight divisions of scriptures were right in his palm, and the source of the Dharma of the Three Vehicles was entirely within his measure. In the sixth year of Tianbao, Prefect Lord Qin and Vice-Prefect Lord Di recognized the loftiness of his conduct and therefore recommended him by name to preside over Xiuguang Temple. The two lords often remarked to one another: “Master Zhen penetrates the profound and marvelous Dharma and the obscure, unsurpassable principle. Asked about one, he gives three in return; as his words issue, echoes respond. Formerly, Lishi was eloquent and erudite, and Sengrui’s wisdom was comprehensive; to run abreast with him, they could not be mentioned in the same day.” In the eighth year [of Tianbao] he passed away at the temple. The local magistrate Wang Sui recounted his virtues and carved the inscription, and Hong Yuanshen wrote the calligraphy.
