Shi Xingjue, whose secular surname was Liu, was a native of Julu. Quick-witted in his childhood, steadfast and unchanging in purpose, he resolved to become a monk, and his relatives could not dissuade him. He early joined Yongtai Monastic Compound in his home prefecture, receiving his training and taking the precepts. Later, in the capital of Luoyang, he met Chan Master Hui, who awakened him to the profound principle, leading him to hold fast to his mind and rectify his conduct. Traveling abroad, he saw an ancient temple in Jiangling whose halls and buildings had collapsed, silent and deserted. Jue put down his sack and hung up his staff. The next day, a woodcutter saw him and expressed astonishment, saying: 'This is Guochang Temple, which has been abandoned for three cycles.' Thus one knows that human affairs condition one another and that the Way accords with the meeting of causes: learners arrived, villagers came, and it flourished into a complete temple. At that time, Military Commissioner Minister Cui invited him into the city, but he declined and did not go. Generous donations arrived in succession, and the transformative teaching flourished greatly. In the fifteenth year of Zhenyuan he announced his end at the age of ninety-two. The people of Jingchu erected a stupa for him. There was also Shi Haoyu of the Southern Peak, a son of the Zhao clan and a native of Shangdang. He left secular life at Faqing Temple; later, under the assembly of Heze, he fully comprehended the mind-seal and entered a hermitage on the Southern Peak to nurture the Way. Wang Zhan, the vice-director and prefect of Hengyang, deeply revered him. At his death he was over eighty years old, and was entombed in a stupa during the Xingyuan era.
