Śramaṇa Daoqi, secular surname Zhao, was a native of Qiantang. As a child he was perceptive and bright, with a magnanimous temperament; upon entering the local school, he became thoroughly versed in the canonical texts. Once, standing by a crossroads, he saw a monk on almsround chanting the *Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra*, and was filled with quiet joy. Thereupon he invited the monk into his house, provided a meal, and asked him, 'In which temple do you reside?' The monk answered, 'The Dingshui Saṅghārāma.' Consequently, he asked his parents for permission to renounce the household life. His mother said, 'When I gave birth to you, I dreamt that my hands held up the sun and moon. I once had this dream divined, and it was said you would be a noble son, destined for high nobility. If you abandon the family, my hopes will be gone.' Nevertheless, he went to Dingshui to follow a teacher. At the age of seventeen, he received the full precepts and studied the vinaya. He then approached Lingyin Temple to study the doctrines of the *Avataṃsaka-sūtra*. From then on, he cultivated dhyāna meditation at Tianzhu Temple and practiced the dhūta austerities. On that mountain there was a stone cave, in which Qi sat; suddenly a giant python raised its head with mouth agape as if to swallow him, but he remained calm and motionless. At times tigers and leopards approached his stone chamber, and herds of deer frequently came to be tamed. Furthermore, water was scarce on the mountain peak; he struck the ground with his tin staff, and a spring gushed forth, truly supplying his needs. In the twenty-first year of the Zhenyuan era, scholars from the four directions urged and requested him to lecture on the *Avataṃsaka-sūtra*; snow was fluttering down when suddenly two stems of flowers sprouted, shaped like lotuses and radiating dazzling light. The onlookers gasped in admiration, having never seen anything like it. Qi's reputation for virtue was fragrant, and his frugality—wearing coarse clothes and eating simple food—was beyond what others could endure. Later he ended his life at the mountain temple. There was also Śramaṇa Faru of Mount Taihang during the Tang, secular surname Han, a native of Cizhou. In his youth he was a merchant, with his mind set on leveling prices. When he came to the present Eastern Capital's Xiangguo Temple, he resolved to renounce the household under Dharma Master Hongsi. After mastering his studies, he proceeded to the Song and Shaoshi Mountains and traveled to the city of Luoyang, where he met the ancestral master Shenhui, who transmitted the essentials of the mind to him. Later, climbing Mount Taihang, he saw that below the Matou Peak was a place where he could settle his spirit, so he tied thatched grass and took up residence. Wang Wenxin, the garrison commander of Chudun, led the multitude to build a monastery for him. Surveillance Commissioner and Censor Li Yaqing ordered him to enter the city, but he did not go. He manifested extinction at the age of eighty-nine. In the third month of the sixth year of the Yuanhe era, his stūpa was relocated.
