Śramaṇa Farong, whose secular surname was Yan, was a native of Langzhong. In his childhood, he loved simplicity and detested fancy, ornate clothing. When his father instructed him to take up the brush, he at once drew images of the Buddha. Even in his childhood games, he would mould sand into stupas; everything he did was an act of the Buddha. When he was barely thirteen, he saw a son of the Śākya, pulled up his robes, sat, and held the scripture scrolls, earnestly begging to renounce worldly life. He relied on Dharma Master Huixiu of Changle Temple as his teacher; both his comprehension of the scriptures and recitation flowed freely, and thereupon he was steeped in the goodness of the precepts. He subsequently lectured on the Nanshan lüchao. Later, traveling as a wanderer over clouds and waters, he saw that the Chan teachings of Pujing of Mount Song flourished widely, and [Pujing] secretly transmitted to him the mind-seal. He went to Funing Temple in Yiyang, living at ease in leisure, where seekers of the Way converged like herds of deer. In the ninth year of the Dahe era, he manifested illness and passed away at the age of eighty-nine. On the tenth day of the first month of that year, his disciples escorted his spirit-seat and interred him in a stupa.
