Śramaṇa Yuanxiang was a man of Shu. At the age of seven he left household life; he comprehensively mastered both internal and external learnings, was skilled in composition, and was hailed as a prodigy at the time. Internally he cultivated the vinaya standards, and no one could find fault with him. In the first year of the Longshuo reign era, he fell ill and passed away in this temple. When his hands and feet were about to be revealed, inside his chamber a long rainbow like white silk flew up into the sky, and the bell-cords of the temple's stūpa rang by themselves without wind. The paintings on the walls of the grand gate peeled off, and every night there were sounds of drums and horns, ceasing only after more than a hundred days. From then on, birds and sparrows would not roost on its roof. In the fourth year of the Xianheng reign era, sweet dew fell upon the palm trees in front of the lecture hall. When Yuanxiang passed away, his disciples gathered over thirty rolls of his collected writings. For the stone image stele in the temple, Yuanxiang composed the text, which he drafted together with Gong Lingkuang.
