Śramaṇa Śīladharma was called Jiefa in Chinese; he was originally a native of Khotan. His learning was comprehensive, and he was skilled in both Chinese and Sanskrit. Living in that country, he was a great Dharma master. During the Zhenyuan era of the Tang, when Wukong returned to Beiting, Yang Xigu, the Military Commissioner of that circuit, along with the monks of Longxing Temple, requested Jiefa to serve as the chief translator to translate the Shidi jing (Daśabhūmika Sūtra). Jiefa personally read the Sanskrit text and translated the language; the śramaṇa Dazhen took it down with the brush; Fachao polished the phrasing; Shanxin certified the meaning; and Wukong certified the Sanskrit text. He also translated the Huixianglun jing. Just as the translation was finished and copying was about to conclude, he met Duan Mingxiu, a palace envoy consoling Beiting. His mission finished, [Duan Mingxiu] returned, accompanying Niu Xin, a reporting officer of Beiting, and Cheng E, a reporting officer of Anxi, to enter the court. Because the Sha and He routes were impassable, they took the Uyghur route, leaving the Sanskrit bundles in the canon of Longxing Temple in Beiting. They brought the translated Chinese texts to the capital, which was the fifth year of Zhenyuan. Just as Jiefa's translation work concluded, he returned to Huodan. Huodan is also called Yutun; these are names used by people north of the mountains, whereas in the languages of the Five Indias it is called Gostana, in Chinese meaning "Kingdom of Milk", or "Earth's Breast".
