Śramaṇa Toutuo was originally the son of a miller from the lower mill; yet his capacity and demeanor were gentle and generous, showing the standard of an elder. His father tasked him with guarding the mill; deep in the night, pitying the exhaustion of the donkeys and oxen, he replaced them with himself, turning the animals loose to graze on grass, drink water, and rest. When his parents learned of this, they ceased their business for his sake. The son also begged to renounce worldly life; he thereupon shaved his hair and received the full precepts. He upheld a mind free from anger, and only gathered rag-heap garments to make robes, which weighed several pounds. For thirty years, he never once changed his bedding. The practice of his bitter asceticism was without equal, and the people of Zhending held him in high esteem. Yet he did not accept offerings from others, so they called him the 'Senior Ascetic' (Dhūta).
