Śramaṇa Quanci was originally a native of Yuhang. He entered Mount Jing to pay homage to Grand Master Faji and seek ordination. His endowed constitution was robust and fertile, and he could withstand hunger and cold. Having traveled and studied broadly, he concealed himself on Mount Heng and erected a grass hut. Feeding on trees and drinking from torrents, he wove soft grass into clothing, changing it neither in winter nor in summer. There was a poem presented to Ci that said: 'Since the dweller of the nest, who has there been / To genuinely transmit the Tathāgata's true seal of the Dharma? / Yesterday, seen beneath Zhurong Peak, / This body clothed in grass is none other than the body of the Snowy Mountains.' This was composed by the former minister of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices Sun Wo when he was demoted to the south; the affair is detailed in the Biographies of Eminent Monks of Nanyue.
