Śramaṇa Huimu, whose secular surname was Zhu, was a native of Jiyang for generations, belonging to an eminent lineage. In his tender youth, the family discipline was strict and clear; he was instructed in the Confucian classics and flourished into an outstanding talent. When he was about to accompany the accounting clerk [to the capital], he visited Chan Master Qizhen of Juezhi Temple—that is, the one posthumously titled Daguan—who subtly admonished him. From this, Mu attained awakening. The following year, he received tonsure and proceeded to Hongjing, where he paid homage to Chan Master Guanyin and instantly understood the mind-tally. In the seventh year of the Xiantong era, he returned to his home district; the county magistrate Master Wei then led the faithful to construct Qizhen Cloister, and Chan travelers from the four quarters arrived from far and near. Surveillance Commissioner Pei Yanlu summoned Mu; thereupon a vihāra was built in the Jianshui Quarter and inscribed with the name of the quarter. After living there, he was content yet able to relocate. Assenting to the request of Qi Zhao, assistant magistrate of Mingzhou, he went to reside on Mount Yusi, and died not long after, at the age of eighty-eight, with a monastic age of forty-five. This was on the third day of the seventh month of the fifth year of the Qianning era.
