Shi Congyin, surnamed Liu, was a native of Sanxiang in Luoyang. In his youth, he was quick-witted and vowed to leave the dust of the world. Once both parents gave permission, he went to the Zhuge Cloister in his home district, relying on a master to chant and study, cultivating his spiritual faculties. Soon, after receiving ordination at Songyang, he went to Changshui to listen and study; after only a few years, he was able to thoroughly penetrate three scriptures and treatises: the Śatadharma, the Madhyamaka, and the Amitābha. Master Yin was old, and he deeply praised Yin's broad penetration of the nature and characteristics [of dharmas]. Later, he went to the Fujin Cloister in Luoyang to lecture upon request. During the Qingtai era of the Later Tang, Yin entrusted him with the lecture seat, and he mounted the Dharma seat three times daily for the assembly. During the long summer days, he would peruse a case of the Tripiṭaka scriptures; his vigorous exertion and austere discipline were unmatched. In the first month of the second year of Qianyou, he manifested illness and passed away, at a worldly age of fifty-three and a saṅgha age of thirty-two. Following the Indian method of cremation, they gathered his true remains, which were round, pure, and delightful; his disciples erected a pagoda, which exists to this day. Next, there was Shi Mengjiang of the Xianquan Cloister in Changshui County, surnamed Yang, a native of that county. His spiritual demeanor was free and easy, transcending worldly patterns. Thereupon, he vowed to leave home, and constantly recited the Renwang and the Prajñā[pāramitā]. After advancing to full ordination, he lectured on the Baifa lun. During the Qingtai era, Guanghua Temple in Longmen invited him to preach for the assembly; it happened that the emperor visited the temple and made inquiries of him, and his marvelous eloquence was divinely effortless, delighting the imperial mind. He was bestowed a purple robe before the emperor on the spot, but steadfastly refused it. He taught and guided for over twenty years; after lecturing, he would practice the Way and prostrate to the Buddha, eating only one meal a day. He was compassionate and patient toward all things, and rarely showed a look of anger. In the third year of Xiande of the Zhou, he died of illness, and monastics and layfolk mourned him in sorrow, erecting a pagoda for him.
