Shi Daoliang's surname was Zhu, and he was a native of Yuezhou. His deceased father had formerly served as governor of Kuaiji Commandery. Liang left home at the age of eight and was thoroughly conversant in the study of the sūtras. After receiving full upasampadā, he studied the 'Three Treatises of Hezhong' and also lectured on the Nirvāṇa Sūtra. Soon after, he entered a deep valley, clad his body in tattered garments, sustained his life on wild greens, and did not engage in worldly affairs, maintaining pure celibacy directly. In the first year of the Shenlong reign era, Emperor Xiaohuai decreed that Liang and ten lineage masters of the Dharma assembly enter the Changle Palace to hold the summer retreat. At that time, the Emperor ordered that he receive the bodhisattva precepts. Ruizong and the empress consort sent unique brocade quilts and felt mats. In the second year, an imperial decree summoned him to the Western Garden to inquire about the Way, and the court held him in high esteem and honour. Area Commander-in-chief Li Xiaoyi, Minister of Works Zhang Xi, Director of the Imperial Academy Cui Rong, Director of the Palace Library He Zhizhang, and Prefect of Muzhou Kang Shen together admired him with one mind, inquired about the mind of Chan, and mostly formed teacher-disciple bonds or transmitted incense and fire. He died at the age of eighty-two. His disciple Huiyuan and others erected a stupa, and Wan Qirong composed an inscription to record his deeds.
