Shi Daojun was a native of Jiangling. He resided at the Bijian hermitage in Zhijiang, practising the Dharma-door of non-arising of the East Mountain, which was the method of transformation taught by the two patriarchs Xin and Ren. Diligent and pure in ascetic practice, he did not set foot outside the temple for over forty years. His room was near yet the man was remote; none dared to seek audience with him, for he engaged only in silence and seclusion. His renown having thus reached the ears of the throne, the two courts of Empress Dowager Tianhou and Emperor Zhongzong held monks of noble conduct in high esteem, and Jun, along with Hengjing, responded to imperial summons to enter the palace to receive offerings. In the Jinglong reign era, he requested to return to his native place. The Emperor bestowed an imperially composed poem upon him, and together with Zang and Jing, he returned to Zhijiang, passing away in his home temple.
