Shi Jufang, surname Cao, was a native of Anlu. From his early years, he established himself with moral resolve. He followed a master to receive instruction at Mingfu Cloister in the prefectural seat under Dhyāna Master Lang, listening to and reciting the two sūtras, the Lotus and the Vimalakīrti. When his training was completed, he received the upasampadā precepts. He lectured on the Treatises of the Southern School for several sessions, and then shook his robes and set out. Wherever there was a dhyāna gathering, he would attend. Later he went to the Northern school's Master Shenxiu, keenly investigating and inquiring, and upon a single meeting Shenxiu tacitly approved him. Shenxiu asked, 'What is it like when the white clouds disperse?' He replied, 'It is not dim.' Shenxiu asked again, 'What is it like after arriving here?' He replied, 'One sees directly that one branch bears five leaves.' Shenxiu nodded. For several years, he entered Shenxiu's room to attend and converse, approaching the true Way, with few who could equal him. He then took his leave, traveled about observing, and arrived at Hanling in Shangdang, where he resided. Over the years, his students numbered in the hundreds, and their requests for teaching were never obstructed. The general drift of his teachings was: genuine and delusion have the same source; slow and fast have different dosages; attaining the mind to assist the Way lies in cultivation and rectification—largely like this. Wu Wenhai, military commissioner of Yunzhou and director of the Chancellery, admired his style and dispatched an envoy to invite him to return to the prefecture, where he established Anguo Cloister. Transmitting the Dharma and transforming disciples, those who honored the ancestral style did not leave their seats, and many were suddenly awakened. The military commissioner asked, 'What about after today?' He replied, 'Gold sand covers the ground, and the people are secure in the precious monastery.' Commissioner Wu believed and submitted. Because of this, the military and civilian population of the whole prefecture revered him. In the Wu household, whether young or old, they venerated him like a divine spirit and made lavish donations. Later, Jufang carried out his teaching at Mount Wutai for more than twenty years. When he was about to pass away, he told the assembly, 'My years have run out here.' Having spoken, he passed away forever, at the age of eighty-one. On the third day of the ninth month of the fifteenth year of Kaiyuan, his whole body was interred in a pagoda. Next is Shi Zhifeng of Anguo Cloister in Hezhong Prefecture, surname Wu, a native of Huai'an. In middle age he studied the Way, rigorously maintaining his discipline and conduct, practicing dhūta; after the morning meal, not a drop of water or liquid passed his teeth. Under Dharma Master Heng of Qingjing Temple in his home prefecture, he shaved his head and took the upasampadā precepts, comprehensively studying the Cheng weishi lun. Someone interrogated him, censuring him for clinging to names and marks, whereupon he indignantly stopped lecturing. Traveling about, he climbed Mount Wudang, met Master Shenxiu, and had his doubts melted away like ice; he then contemplated nurturing the sacred fetus. Suddenly taking leave, he went out to Mount Anfeng in Pujin, where he confined his steps for ten years, eating from trees and drinking from ravines. It happened that the prefectural governor Wei Wensheng invited him to return into the city, building the New Anguo Cloister for him to reside in. Because of this, monastics in coarse robes rushed to him in great numbers. The governor asked, 'What about after today for me?' He replied, 'The sun rises from the Mengfan Abyss, shining on trees without a single shadow.' The governor at first did not understand the meaning, so he bowed and withdrew. Shortly thereafter he came to understand, his heart filled with humble contentment. Zhifeng traveled back and forth to Mount Zhongtiao for over twenty years, living frugally without abundance. Those who attained his Way were beyond count. After he passed away, his disciples built a pagoda thirty paces north of the prefecture.
