On the sixteenth day of the eighth month in the twentieth year, the *renshen* year, at Guangfu Temple in Luoyang, he instructed his disciples, saying: 'When the bright moon is full, I shall depart.' He then bowed to Vairocana Buddha, circumambulated seven times, retired to his quarters, burned incense, made vows, and placed upon his head the Sanskrit palm-leaf manuscripts along with the newly translated teachings. Having completed his entrustment, he peacefully passed away. His age was seventy-one, and his dharma age was fifty-one. On the seventh day of the eleventh month of that year, he was buried to the right of the Yi River, south of Longmen, and a stūpa was erected to commemorate him. His lineage disciple Amoghavajra submitted a memorial, and an imperial decree posthumously bestowed upon him the title of National Preceptor. His initiation disciple Du Hongjian, Vice Director of the Secretariat, who had always taken refuge in and revered him, composed an inscription recording his virtues.
