Shi Qingche's origins are unknown. He traveled through vinaya academies, secretly guarding his sense-doors; he had no permanent teacher, aligning himself only with the good. At first, under Vinaya Master Daoheng in the North Courtyard of Kaiyuan Temple in Wuyuan, he gained intimate access to the profound inner chambers and thoroughly mastered the principles; he was celebrated with glorious renown, and everyone praised and recommended him. In the guisi year, the eighth year of the Yuanhe era of Xianzong, he made up his mind to compose a commentary in twenty fascicles, also gathering together the essential and pertinent views of various masters to explain the *Nanshan Chao*; it was titled *Jiyi* (Collected Meanings), or sometimes called *Houtang* (The Latter Hall). In the tenth year, the writing was completed. Nowadays, lecturers in Yuzhang, Wuchang, and Jinling mostly follow these interpretations. Having examined this record, its principle is broad and comprehensive. The end of Qingche's life is unknown.
