He had always heard that in the great country of Cīna, Mañjuśrī resided, and pointing his staff toward the east, he vowed to transmit the Buddhist teachings there. He then took to the sea and sailed eastward. When he was about to reach Guangzhou, a wind blew him back, carrying him to the east of Siṃhala. He gathered provisions again, refitted a great ship, and traveled throughout the various countries of the Southern Seas for twenty-two years. When he again drew near Panyu, a storm of wind and waves suddenly arose; the ship was wrecked and the people drowned, with only Prajñā surviving. By the fifth watch of the night, the wind finally ceased, but the scriptures and treatises he had carried were lost without a trace. When he climbed onto the seashore, his palm-leaf manuscripts were already on the beach; he found them inside a large bamboo cylinder within the white sand, just as if spirits had carried them ashore. He then sighed and said: "Regarding sūtras such as this Mahāyāna Naya, I think the faculties of the people of Cīna are now ripe!"
