The śramaṇa Xuanjue was a native of the state of Gaochang; his clan lineage in the Western Regions has not been ascertained. He admired and studied the Mahāyāna, investigating sūtras and treatises under the Tripiṭaka Master Xuanzang, and also took part in the translations at Yuhua Palace. When the *Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra* was near completion, they jointly requested to translate the *Ratnakūṭa-sūtra*, but Xuanzang declined in exhaustion. Thereupon, Xuanjue dreamt of a stūpa, ornate, tall, and magnificent, suddenly collapsing to the ground; he started awake and told Xuanzang. Xuanzang said, 'This does not concern your own person; it is merely an omen of my passing.' Xuanjue grieved silently and in distress, urging the companions in the Dharma to vie in seeking medicine. Xuanjue's eventual end was not known.
