The śramaṇa Jñānabhadra, translated into Chinese as Zhixian, was a native of the state of Poling (also called Heling) in the South Seas; he was well versed in the learning of the Tripiṭaka. During the Linde era, the śramaṇa Huining of Chengdu wished to travel to India to pay homage to the holy traces, and took ship westwards; on his way he passed through Poling, and thereupon collaborated with Zhixian to translate the latter part of the *Nirvāṇa Sūtra* in two fascicles. This was translated out of the *Āgama-sūtra*, recounting the World-Honoured One's cremation of the coffin and collection of the śarīra, which differs considerably from the *Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra*. When the translation was completed, the scripture was sent to Jiaozhou, and only then did Huining set out for the Western Regions. At the beginning of the Yifeng era, Liang Nandi, Area Commander of Jiaozhou, sent an envoy along with Huining's disciple Yunqi to present a memorial submitting the scripture to the capital. In the third year, wuyin, the śramaṇa Linghui of Great Cien Temple made a request to the Crown Prince to put it into circulation. Yunqi had served his master with unmatched filial devotion; his master had ordered him to take the scripture and propagate it, which was why he had not accompanied him like a shadow to the Western Regions.
