Appraisal: Daoist deliverance from the corpse is explained in many ways, sometimes hiding the true form while leaving the false vessel behind. How much more so for Great Beings who have attained the bhūmis, or arhats whose outflows are exhausted? Whether existing here while dying elsewhere, or dividing their bodies and altering their forms, all of this is merely their sport, used to benefit beings. Buddhapāli's appearances and disappearances were without fixed course—how could his transformations have an end? That he emerged from the Vajra Cavern to guide Master Fazhao was simply because there was a karmic affinity between them, and so he suddenly manifested. Thus Dhūta Kāśyapa long concealed himself among the peaks, and when Faxian of the Jin traveled to Vulture Peak, he saw him beneath the mountain.
