He traveled south to the seashore, where he encountered an extraordinary monastery and attained the Lotus samādhi. He gathered sand to build stupas, reaching nearly ten thousand. Even when a black snake bit his finger, he did not turn back or rest. He then boarded a merchant vessel to travel to various countries, secretly cultivating dhyāna and recitation, his mouth emitting white light. Without wind for three days, the ship sailed ten thousand li. It happened that the merchants met bandits and were in danger of losing their lives together. Pitying his companions, Śubhakara silently recited a dhāraṇī. The Blessed One of Seven Koṭīs [Cundī] fully manifested her bodily form, and the bandits were indeed wiped out by other raiders. The raiders then confessed their crimes and took refuge, pointing the way through safe and perilous terrain. Soon crossing the remote wilderness and traversing poisonous waters, no sooner had he reached the borders of Central India than he encountered its king. The king's consort was Śubhakara's elder sister; she asked why he had renounced the throne and could not praise him enough. That day, holding hands, they returned together; clouds of compassion spread their shade, and the entire territory was transformed greatly.
