Śramaṇa Daoxing, whose surname was Yang, was a native of Guiyang. From birth, his mind was exceptionally sharp and bright, and his body was like ice and snow. At just twelve years of age, he vowed in his heart to admire the Way. He studied at the Prajñā Bodhimaṇḍa on the Southern Peak and sought instructions in Zhongling. Having silently verified the Dharma by himself, he called it the "Self-Mastery Samādhi." From then on, he wore patch-cloth robes and cattail-grass shoes merely to sustain his remaining breaths. Moving to the southwest of Liyang, he felled trees to build a room, dwelling in a single square-zhang hut, where tigers and leopards often lay submissive between his bed and couch. Later, people brought timber and materials to build a hall for him; in less than ten days, everything was fully provided. Looking closely, it was completely devoid of human beings; only then was it known that ghosts and spirits had offered timber and contributed labor. The prefect earnestly summoned him to dwell at the Kaiyuan Temple in the prefectural seat. Not long after, in the fifteenth year of the Yuanhe era, he passed away at the age of sixty-nine. They cremated his body, recovered śarīra, and erected a stūpa.
