Śramaṇa Quanzai, surnamed Shen, was a native of Qiantang. While still an infant in arms, he took no pleasure in meat or blood. His mother repeatedly observed auspicious signs and urged him to take refuge under Grand Master Faji of Mount Jing to shave his hair and dye his robes. When he cultivated dhyāna-contemplation, he stood lofty and prominent, unmixed with the worldly dust, and emulated the twelve dhūtas to embellish his conduct; the common folk referred to him as "Daoist Zai." When he went on pilgrimage to consult masters in various quarters, he received the seal of verification from Chan Master Shishuang, who secretly gave him protection and care; he then entered Anyan (the Dark Cliff) on Mount Tiantai to perpetuate his aspiration—this cliff stood facing the retreat of Hanshanzi, and was a place where mountain demons and tree monsters congregated. During Zai's dwelling there for more than twenty years, evil birds changed their calls, and mountain spirits ceded their caverns. When he went about in circumambulation, ghosts and spirits performed service for him, either sweeping his path, attending by his side, drawing spring water on his behalf, or gathering fruits to offer; people frequently saw this, but Zai never spoke of it. Later, in the fifth year of the Tiancheng era, his Chan companions from Mount Jing went to welcome him back to reside at the Zhengguo Monastery, where he passed away at the original monastery of his ordination.
