The commentary says: Tanmoxui entered the black gate because of his lecturing on the Dharma and harboring notions of self and other. If those practicing dhyāna and recitation allow notions of self and other to grow accordingly, one knows they too will not escape. Tanmoxui debated with the Daoist Jiang Bin, and the merit of protecting the Dharma could compensate for his previous faults. One should not claim that all who propagate the Dharma fall into realms of deficit. Empress Hu's partial view remained unbanished—alas!
