The appraisal states: The doctrinal approaches of 'nature and characteristics' only achieved complete culmination in the Tang dynasty. Master Xuanzang was the founding patriarch who initiated Yogācāra and Vijñaptimātra, while Ji was the leading master who preserved the texts and produced treatises. Only the 'founding patriarch' and the 'leading master' are granted offerings unending for a hundred generations! For their merit and virtue covered sentient beings, being both vast and great. If Xuanzang had lacked Ji, who would have propagated his learning as a master? Who would have opened the eyes of the people of the world? The two masters established merit and composed words, both remaining immortal. Thus Ji, nephew of the Duke of E and disciple of Master Xuanzang, was what is called one coming from a family of generals to become a commander of the Dharma—a singular person in a thousand years. Hence the Book of Documents has it: 'When the father has cleared the ground, will his son be unwilling to sow the seed? How much more then should he be willing to reap the harvest?' Does this not refer to the Master of a Hundred Commentaries!
