Shi Yuanzhen, whose style name was Yongzang, was a son of the Zhu family of Shanghai in Songjiang. He left household life and received the full ordination at Xingsheng Monastery, transmitting the Tiantai teachings and contemplations. His conduct in the precepts was lofty and pure, and he read broadly across many books. He diligently practiced the repentance rituals of the Lotus and Amitābha, and in his leisure time copied the Lotus and various other sūtras. Preaching according to conditions, he sat in meditation until dawn. In the yichou year of the Hongwu reign, he suffered a slight illness. Asking for a bath, he wrote a gāthā and told the assembly: / 'For forty-two years, / Neither creating nor cultivating. / There is arising and there is perishing, / A single bubble in the great sea. / The true return is no return; / The mind empty, roaming in purity.' / Sitting cross-legged, he passed away peacefully.
