Shi Daoyuan was styled Che'an. He was a native of the Deng family of Mianzhou. In his youth, he left home and received full ordination at Jiangji Monastery. He visited Master Dabie Dao, who had him contemplate the phrase 'Vast and void, with nothing holy.' Suddenly, he burst into laughter and said, 'Bodhidharma was actually right here all along!' Master Dao instructed him to study under Fojian and Foyan, and both appreciated him. He also went to Jinshan to see Yuanwu and presented his view. Yuanwu did not accept it. When Yuanwu was summoned by imperial decree to reside at Yunju, Yuan followed him. Although he had some realization, the obstruction in his chest had ultimately not dispersed. Then Yuanwu asked a monk, 'When birth-and-death arrives, what then?' The monk said, 'The incense stand laughs at the venerable monk.' Next, he asked Yuan, 'What about you?' Yuan said, 'The grass-bandits are utterly defeated.' Yuanwu said, 'When someone asks you, what then?' Yuan was about to reply, when Yuanwu pressed upon him, saying, 'The grass-bandits are utterly defeated!' Yuan had a great penetration. Yuanwu struck him with his fist. Yuan clapped his hands and laughed heartily. Yuanwu said, 'What did you see that makes you act like this?' He said, 'The poisonous fist has not yet been repaid; I will never forget it for eternal kalpas.'
