Shi Xiaoying, styled Zhongwen, was of unknown lineage. He trained in various monasteries and suddenly understood the Great Matter, winning the veneration of the four assemblies. In his later years, he returned to the shores of Luohu, shut his doors, swept away visitors, and did not interact with the worldly. He took only what he had seen and heard throughout his life—the instructional sayings of venerable masters from all quarters, the words of friends discussing the teachings of the sect, and statements related to standard canons obtained from damaged steles and moth-eaten bamboo slips—and compiled them all into a work entitled *Luohu yelu* (Rustic Records of Luohu). What is recorded therein are the pristine beauty of the words and deeds of epoch-making patriarchal masters and worthy literati, the sharpness and swiftness of their dynamic exchanges, the magnificence of their responses, and the vastness of their spirit, which can support the ancestral vehicle, instruct later students, and uplift people to supreme goodness. Therefore, those who read it cannot bear to put it down.
