Shi Xiansong was a son of the Li family of Tongliang, Chongqing, in Western Shu. Thoroughly experienced and weary of travel, he appeared in the world to reside at Xuanmi Cloister in Bachuan. For thirty years, his footsteps never went beyond the threshold. During the Shaoxing era, he gathered the assembly and spoke a gāthā, saying: / "For eighty years, surging and vast, / Opening wide a shop to sell the mani jewel. / There is not a single person to negotiate together; / It is not that this mountain monk closes shop too early." / Having finished speaking, he sat upright and passed away. After jhāpita, the śarīra were countless. At that time there was Master Jingye, a son of the Wen family of Shizhao. In his youth he was a butcher by trade. There was a sheep just giving suck to two lambs; as he was about to slaughter her, the two lambs held his knife in their mouths and knelt down before the door, as if begging for their mother's life. Deeply moved, the Master abandoned his family to become a monk. He vigorously investigated under Chan masters and suddenly had a great awakening, composing a gāthā: / "Yesterday, a rākṣasa's mind; / Today, a bodhisattva's face. / Between rākṣasa and bodhisattva, / Not even a single thread divides."
