Shi Baoyan, whose courtesy name was Shiwei, had the style name Huantang. He was the youngest son of the Kang family of Chengji. Having suffered from war and disorder, he and his younger brother both shaved their hair and became monks. Later, he called upon Zhenjue, received the transmission of the Xianshou school's essential teachings, and succeeded to his Way. As a person, he was pure, simple, and unpretentious; the state of his heart was as clear as still water. When Zhenjue sat at the bodhimaṇḍa on three occasions, Yan and his younger brother both accompanied and assisted him. When Zhenjue entered extinction, he succeeded to his seat. Before long, he received an imperial decree to dwell at the two monasteries of Pu'an and Youguo for the longest duration. Together with the venerable Dalin Xing, internally and externally, they greatly propagated the teachings of Qingliang. In the seventh month of the second year of the Zhizhi reign period, he entered quiescence. His worldly age was fifty-one. A stupa was built at the entrance to Fenggu.
