Shi Rongzhao, courtesy name Huiguang, belonged to a family of Nanming in Yue. In his early years, he received instruction at Huazang. He set his mind on cultivating and studying the Tiantai doctrine and contemplation at Mount Anguo in Taizhou and at Tianzhu in Hangzhou. Later, he followed Master Yuansou Zhan, residing at Yanqing Monastery in Huating. He exerted himself vigorously in the doctrinal vehicles and diligently cultivated dhyāna-concentration, burning oil to prolong the daylight, unceasing day and night. Thus his learning was achieved through sheer resolve; he was an exemplar in the monasteries, and his rank rose above the assembly. For forty years his renown reached the capital. An imperial decree praised him and conferred upon him a master's title. Every year on New Year's Day, he led the assembly in cultivating the Golden Light Repentance to pray for blessings for the sovereign. Outside of expounding the Dharma, he devoted his efforts to repentance rituals, sweeping away dust and obscurations for all sentient beings and guiding them into roots of virtue. As he grew old, he became even more diligent. There were three people who obtained his Dharma: Jujian, Zongju, and Zongquan, all of whom were dragons and elephants of the Dharma gate.
