The appraisal states: After Mu'an awakened to the three contemplations in one mind, he should have waved the fly-whisk to give voice to the Tiantai teaching; yet, precisely because he could not obliterate all traces of it, he traveled everywhere to question the followers of Bodhidharma. This was truly like a fragrant elephant crossing a river, wanting to step straight to the very bottom. Therefore, it was only fitting that as soon as he stepped into Longmen, he could overturn torrents and topple mountains. How magnificent! There are those in the world who study the three contemplations yet, when pointing to the single word 'awakening', do not know what kind of thing it is; mistakenly taking dregs for ghee, they slander wall-contemplation while claiming to protect the teaching. Are they not worms within the lion's body? Therefore, the *Yanshan ji* severely rebukes the book *Tiantai jiao chuan fo xinyin*; its later fascicle ought to be deleted, for it causes students to be obstructed from the gate of awakening and creates no small amount of hellish karma.
