Master Mingda: no one knew where he came from. He resided at Wanhuai's former temple in Wenxiang County. Passing travelers all visited Mingda to inquire about good and bad fortune. Mingda gave no answers, but merely revealed his intentions through signs. Once, someone visited Mingda and asked: 'I wish to go to the capital to visit my parents. Are my parents well?' Mingda handed him a bamboo staff; when he reached the capital, his parent had died. Another visited Mingda; Mingda took a temple horse, ordered him to mount it, and had him gallop south and north; when the gallop ended, he led it away. When that person reached the capital, he was appointed Surveillance Judge and rode post horses, reaching everywhere. Another visited Mingda; Mingda used the staff he held to draw a mound on the ground and pounded it with the staff, leaving a pit in the earth, which the person did not understand; upon reaching the capital, a swelling broke out on his back, and when it was lanced, blood flowed down to the ground. When Li Linfu was Vice Minister of the Chancellery, he escorted the imperial retinue returning westward and visited Mingda; Mingda placed a steelyard on his shoulder; upon reaching the capital, Li became prime minister. When Li Yongmen was magistrate of Hucheng, Mingda suddenly asked for his pony. Yongmen refused to give it. A day later, as he mounted the horse and was about to set out, the horse suddenly reared up on its hind legs in the courtyard by the temple gate, and he fell from the horse and died. Instances of this kind were very numerous. Mingda also once stood facing north at the temple gate and said: 'Why are there so many soldiers and horses in this valley?' He also sighed deeply, saying: 'Everywhere here is full of armies.' When Geshu Han amassed troops at Tong Pass to resist the rebel barbarians, Wenxiang below the pass was turned entirely into a battlefield.
