Śramaṇa Quanzai, surnamed Shen in lay life, was a man of Qiantang. Even as an infant in arms, he took no pleasure in meat or blood. His mother repeatedly witnessed auspicious omens and urged him to go to Great Master Faji at Mount Jingshan to have his hair shaven. When he practiced Chan contemplation, he was lofty and prominent, untainted by the mundane world. Admiring the twelve dhūtas, he adorned his practice with them. The common saying called him Master Zai. When he visited masters in various quarters, he received confirmation from Chan Master Shishuang and was secretly nurtured by him. He entered Anyan on Mount Tiantai to perpetuate his aspiration. That cliff stood opposite the retreat of Hanshanzi; it was a dense haunt of demons and wood-sprites. During the more than twenty years that Zai resided there, evil birds changed their calls and mountain spirits yielded their caves. When he walked about practicing circumambulation, ghosts and spirits served him, some sweeping his path, some attending at his side, some drawing water in his stead, and some offering vegetables and fruits. From time to time people saw this, but Zai never spoke of it. Later he died at Zhenguo Cloister.
