State Preceptor Dampa was also named Gongjia. He was a man of Gesisi, Danma in Tugansi of the Western Tubo. In his youth he followed Gautamaśrī from Western Tianzhu, learning and mastering Sanskrit secrets and grasping their essential teachings. During the Zhongtong era of Shizu, Imperial Preceptor 'Phags-pa recommended him. At that time there was a great drought in Huaimeng. Shizu ordered him to pray for it, and it immediately rained. He also once chanted mantras over food and cast it into a dragon pool; in a short while, extraordinary flowers and rare fruits welled up from the surface of the waves, and he took them to present to the emperor. Shizu was greatly pleased. When Assistant Commissioner of Military Affairs Yuedemishi was stationed in Chaozhou, his wife contracted a strange disease. Dampa touched her body with his rosary, and she was instantly cured. He also once recounted a strange dream to Yuedemishi, and both that and the date of his return to the court were subsequently verified. During the Yuanzhen era, Qaidu invaded the Tibetan borders. Chengzong ordered him to pray to the deity Mahākāla. Soon after, the victory report indeed arrived. He also prayed for Chengzong when he was ill, and he quickly recovered. The gifts bestowed on him were very generous. Moreover, [the emperor] decreed that ten palace guard officers be assigned to form his retinue. When Chengzong went on an inspection tour to the north, he ordered Dampa to ride an elephant carriage ahead as the vanguard. Crossing Yunchuan, he told his disciples, 'There are weird spirits in this place; fearing they may frighten the imperial carriage, we should secretly recite divine mantras to suppress them.' Before long, severe wind and rain arose; the multitude were all terrified, but the tent palace alone was safe and unharmed. [The emperor] again bestowed on him a cup inlaid with green jade. He died in the summer of the seventh year of the Dade era. During the Huangqing era, he was posthumously granted the title of Incomparable Imperial Preceptor Dampa, the Greatly Awakened, Broadly Beneficent, and Widely Illuminating.
