Shi Tansui: it is not known where he was from. He left household life in his youth and resided at Baima Monastery in Heyin. Eating a vegetarian diet and wearing coarse cloth robes, he chanted the Lotus Sūtra. He also had an understanding of the sūtra’s purport and explained it to others. Often in the middle of the night, he suddenly heard a knock on the door, saying, “We wish to invite the Dharma Master to preach the Dharma for ninety days.” Tansui did not consent, but upon their persistent entreaties, he went. While he was still asleep, by the time he awoke, he was already inside the shrine of the god of Baima Ridge together with one disciple. From then on, he secretly went there every day, without anyone else knowing. Later, monks of the monastery passed before the shrine and saw two high seats: Tansui was on the north and the disciple on the south. There seemed to be the sound of preaching, and an extraordinary fragrance was smelled. Thereupon, clerics and laypeople alike spread word of the divine marvel. When the summer ended, the deity offered a white horse, five white sheep, and ninety bolts of silk. After the blessing of transference was finished, [the phenomenon] ceased.
