Shi Daolin was originally a native of Shanyin in Kuaiji. He renounced household life at a young age and possessed precept practice. He was skilled in the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra and Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, and recited the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra. Zhang Xu of the state of Wu paid him reverence and served him. Later, he lived at Linquan Monastery in Fuyang County. Ghostly monsters were often there, but once Lin resided there, they vanished. Lin's disciple Huishao was crushed by a collapsing building, his head sinking into his chest. Lin prayed for him. At night, Shao saw two foreign monks pull out his head. Rising at dawn, he was completely restored. Lin thereupon held a vegetarian feast for the holy monks (āryasaṅgha), spreading fresh silk upon the couch. When the feast ended, footprints of a human were seen upon the silk, over three chi long. The multitude all submitted to this miraculous response. The people of Fuyang then began setting up a seat for holy monks in every household to feed them. At the beginning of the Liang, Lin went out to live at Qi'xi Monastery. In the eighteenth year of the Tianjian reign era, he passed away, at seventy-three years of age.
