Śramaṇa Huiwu: his clan origin is unknown. He lived in seclusion in Mount Taibai, holding and chanting the Avataṃsaka-sūtra and ingesting pine nuts and atractylodes. Suddenly, at one time, he saw a lay devotee arrive, who said he was inviting him. The lay devotee leaped into the air and had Wu sit inside his sash, carrying him along in flight to a bodhimaṇḍa. He saw five hundred extraordinary monks arriving in flight through the air. Wu hurriedly went to take a seat in the lowest row. The lay devotee spoke to him, saying: "Master, you uphold the Avataṃsaka, which is the realm of the Buddha; how can you sit below minor sages?" He then led him to sit above the five hundred people. When the meal was finished, the lay devotee said: "The original intention of this vegetarian feast was solely for you, Master; though five hundred arhats came to eat, they were all temporarily invited for the occasion." He then sent him back to his original place, like awakening from a dream. This occurred during the Yonghui era of Emperor Gaozong.
