Minister of Works Dou Kang, Duke of Chenrong, stepped onto the central avenue early and long knew the place of jewels. Although he attained the highest ministerial rank, he concentrated his mind on wonderful awakening. Thereupon, he renounced pure wealth and founded the Jingfa Monastery, whose adornments and magnificent architecture rivaled the celestial palaces. His younger brother Jin fulfilled the difficult duty of filial respect in his demeanor and was devoted to rescuing beings from the evil destinies. On behalf of his deceased father, the Duke of Anfeng, and his deceased mother, Princess Chengan, he reverently produced one set each of the Lotus Sūtra and the Diamond Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra. Endowed with wonderful thoughts and divine ingenuity, his hidden sentiments attained singular realization. Whenever the lotuses were about to bloom, he would wash his body and clothes, personally pluck the petals of the white lotuses in the pond, dry them purely in the sun, and pound them into paper. Thereupon, he adorned the sanctuary, personally copied the sūtras, and pierced his chest to draw blood, using it as ink. This affair has rarely had an equal since antiquity, and by all reason must have yielded many auspicious signs. Yet Jin was modest, yielding, cautious, and secretive, refusing to let it be known outside, so that later generations heard nothing of it. How regrettable! These sūtras were sealed in a jeweled depository, and exist to this day.
