Commander Wu, whose personal name is forgotten, went on an expedition east to Goguryeo and captured the fortress of Mayi. Setting fire to the buildings, [the blaze] extended to a temple. Looking from outside the fortress, smoke and clouds rose straight up, and in their midst was an object like a white ribbon, flying high into the clouds; after a moment it fluttered down into the grass east of the fortress. Commander Wu rode his horse over to inspect it and saw yellow paper spread out on the ground; approaching to examine it, it was none other than the seventh fascicle of the Lotus Sūtra. Thereupon, he took it back to the camp and placed it atop his tent for the night. Suddenly there was a violent rainstorm, but when he took it down the next morning, it was not wet at all. Later, when he was returning to the capital, he held a celebratory vegetarian feast at the former residence of General Li Yichang in Jing'an Ward. Śramaṇas Wanxiang and Xuanji of Xingshan Monastery personally saw the sūtra and each read it once. Commander Wu promised to submit it to the inner court, saying, 'This was achieved through pure karma produced by copying in accordance with the Dharma; thus it has shown such a special omen in order to awaken all beings.'
