Lu Zai, Palace Cadet to the Crown Prince and Palace Attendant and Censor-in-Chief under the Later Wei, was originally a man of Wu. He served as Chief Clerk to the Commander-in-Chief of the Expeditionary Army, Liu Yizhen, Prince of Xianyang under the Song Emperor Wu. Later he was captured by the Helian clan, and consequently took office under the Wei. He had talent and wit, and was fond of jesting talk; yet by nature he loved emptiness and tranquility, and constantly kept his mind on the Buddhadharma. He frequently recited various sūtras, praising the profound truth. In his final years, his devotion became consummate, and the characters of the sūtra emitted light; through reciting the Lotus Sūtra, he frequently stimulated the appearance of śarīra.
