Shi Daojin, whose clan is unknown, was a native of Jingzhou. He was diligent and rigorous in his vinaya practice, and chanted this scripture. Clothed in plain cloth and eating only one meal [a day], his capacity nearly surpassed ordinary men. Later he traveled to the capital region (Guanfu), looking up to Vinaya Master Daoxuan as his guide, inquiring about the essentials for liberation, probing the profound to the utmost, second only to the past worthies. Later, while widely seeking the wondrous crossing, he stayed at Biancai Monastery. Suddenly his body collapsed and his breathing grew faint. After several days, he saw himself being arrested by nether officials and brought before the king [of the underworld]. The king said, 'Master, you chant the Lotus Sūtra and your monastic discipline is pure; you ought to be born in the fourth heaven, in the assembly of the Compassionate Honoured One (Maitreya). I, your disciple, possess a sinful and evil body, and fear I would not meet you again. Therefore, I wished to see you, Master, hoping you might deign to save me.' Daojin thereupon revived briefly, recounted everything in full to the monks, and passed away as soon as he finished speaking. Furthermore, Shi Hongcan also chanted the Lotus Sūtra; mountain deities and monastery spirits repeatedly came and went to pay homage to him (and so forth).
