Shi Sengyi was a native of Yuhang in Wuxing. From his youth he was faithful and perceptive, early on possessing a conduct detached from worldly dust. When he first left household life, he stayed at Mount Lu, relying on Huiyuan for his practice and study. In his diligence, plainness, and bitter austerities, he was held in high esteem by his fellow disciples. He constantly recited the complete Lotus Sūtra. In the thirteenth year of the Yixi era of the Jin, together with like-minded companions he traveled through Kuaiji, journeying to visit its mountains and waters. Arriving northwest of Qinwang, he saw five peaks standing side by side, having the appearance of Gṛdhrakūṭa. He then tied grass to build a hermitage, calling it the Lotus Hermitage (Fahua jingshe). For more than thirty years, he ate wild herbs and drank from the streams. In the twenty-seventh year of the Yuanjia era of the Song, he died at the age of seventy.
