Śramaṇa Huiguan was a man of unknown origin. He drifted as a sojourner to Xuanjin, and listened to Dharma Master Xian's lectures at Nanjian Temple, becoming the foremost among his peers. Later he suddenly contracted a malignant disease, and upon regaining consciousness, he urged himself to recite the Lotus Sūtra and sincerely repent. Once his concentrated sincerity penetrated fully, his digestive obstruction was completely cleared. Thereupon he took the Lotus Sūtra as his vocation. Emperor Wu of the Liang decreed that Guan enter the Shouguang Hall. Because he was no longer permitted to lecture outside, he turned to composing doctrinal commentaries; his words had the flavor of musical harmonies, and his phrasing and arguments were richly comprehensive. Xiao Quan, Heir Apparent of Wuping, who was overseeing Fanzhou in Lingnan, invited Guan to travel thither to propagate and lecture on the Lotus Sūtra. Monastics and laypeople submitted their hearts to him, and auspicious omens frequently occurred. Later it was not known where he ended his life.
