Śramaṇa Sengqian was a man of Kuaiji. In his youth he was broadly learned, having a comprehensive command of many subjects. He frequently delivered lectures and composed commentaries on various sūtras, which contained profound principles. He recited the Lotus Sūtra for over fifty years. On the dawn of the twenty-seventh day of the ninth month of the fourth year of Tianbao under Emperor Ming of the Liang, he saw in a dream Samantabhadra Bodhisattva riding a white elephant, coming from the eastern direction. Holding a white object in his hand, he pointed it at Sengqian's crown. At that moment Sengqian knew it was Samantabhadra; in his heart he was startled and overjoyed, and could only recite with his mouth, 'Namo Samantabhadra Bodhisattva!' Before he could offer prostrations, he immediately awakened. Later it was not known where he ended his life.
