Shi Zhiyue, surnamed Zheng, was a native of Nanyang. He left home in his youth and parted early from defilements and secular life. Later, arriving in Jinling, he met Zhizhe. Turning north in respect, he offered his sincere devotion, and Zhizhe bestowed upon him the methods of meditation. He deeply penetrated the five gates and thoroughly mastered the six wondrous aspects. He recited the Lotus Sūtra more than ten thousand times; the water in his pitcher would fill of itself, which was the power of the sūtra. Although the students were numerous, he was counted as the foremost among them. At the Lu Shan Vihāra in Linhai, there were great spiritual wonders; Zhizhe often had him serve as his respondent. After Zhizhe concealed his traces [passed away], the entire assembly of Mount Tiantai turned to him. On the twenty-third day of the eleventh month in the twelfth year of the Daye reign era (616 CE), he took to his bed with an illness for ten days, and passed away lying on his right side at the age of seventy-four. On the day of his demise, the mountains collapsed and the earth quaked, seen and heard by all the clergy and laity in the region.
